Jalea Ion (1887 - ?, born in Casimcea, Constanta). Romanian sculptor. After graduating the School of Crafts (1908), he studied at the Fine Arts School in Bucharest, with the sculptors Fr. Storck and Dimitrie Paciurea. He also studied in Paris, at the Julian Academy, in Bourdelle’s studio. He was awarded the Grand Prize at international exhibitions in Paris (1937) and Barcelona, the National Prize for Sculpture (1941), the Estate Prize (1957); he was awarded the title of People’s Artist (1957). Member of the Romanian Academy. In 1956 he was elected President of the Artists’ Union. He created numerous statues, monuments, busts, reliefs. He had a cult for shape as a result of observation of reality that he combined with some fantastic morphologies evoking the Antique mythology. A Romantic trend was added in the case of some voivodes’ statues. His heroical subjects have an ethical sense. His compositions follow the antique rules of equilibrium and the harmonious links between parts, between dynamic elements combined in a harmonious, coherent whole. His style is a synthesis between the realist and the allegoric levels, this quality being noticeable in his most representative work, "Archer Resting".
